On Alternia, Karkat was Equius' hemospectral superior, so he tended not to engage in conversation unless he absolutely had to. This relationship hasn't much improved in the Tower; Equius is still afraid of him, as he is wont to do with those above him, and they've really only spoken to one another in group settings where Karkat is too busy whining and Equius finds himself unable to get a word in.
